32 blog assignments + 1 for Weebly Website

There have been 32 blog assignments, the google docs assignments, the about.me website and the weebly website.

In addition to the 32 writing blog assignments, you need to have a blog post that includes a link to your Weebly Website.

Your brand new Website

The about.me webpage needs to have all the information visible without scrolling especially the link to your blog.  You need to have your name and at least 5 complete correctly written sentences about yourself.  All of the writing needs to be legible (adjust font size and color so it can be read easily).


So, in order to get 5 credits for Intro to Technology, you must 


1) have the google docs assignments completed and shared
2) the about.me website completed correctly
3) the weebly website completed correctly and linked from a blog post
4) at least 30 blog assignments completed correctly.

32 Blog Assignments

Some blog assignments have an assignment number other blog assignments just have a name and some have both.  Make sure you have titled each assignment correctly.  When I am calculating your grade and credits earned, it will be based on correctly completed assignments.  In order to earn 5 credits you must have at least 30 correctly completed blog assignments.  The assignments are listed here.

Make sure you have the assignment # in the title (if one was given) or the name of the assignment in the title (examples- Motivation, Me in Forty-Five Words, etc.).  Make sure each assignment fulfills the minimum specifications for the assignment (minimum 150 words, etc.)

There will be no new assignments for these last 3 days.  You are to use this time to make sure you have all your blog assignments done correctly and titled correctly.

Expertise

We all have things that we do well and things that we might not be able to do at all.  The same goes for knowledge (not just academic knowledge).  I know a lot about beach volleyball, but know next to nothing about World of Warcraft.

This post is for you to show off your knowledge or expertise of a particular subject (hobby, interest, etc.)  You can describe in detail a topic of interest that you know a lot about.  You can describe in detail a hobby or special skill that you are good at.

Include at least 3 pictures
Include at least 1 link
Minimum 200 words.
Minimum 4 paragraphs.  Including a space between groups of sentences is how to separate paragraphs in your blog.

200 words about ???

Pick a topic, any topic as long as it is school appropriate.  Write at least 200 words in complete sentences in at least 3 paragraphs.  Make it interesting or dramatic or funny or thought provoking or all of those things.  Don't make it boring.  You are to write this yourself (original writing).  Do not include writing done by someone else.  Include pictures (at least 2) and a link(s) if it relates to your writing.  Title the blog post something that relates to what you are writing about.

Here are some different kinds of writing that would work for this assignment.

Modes of Writing

(Adapted from the Oregon Department of education Spring 1991)

Narrative: recounts a personal experience based on something which really happened (or might really have happened). All details work together in an integrated way to create a complete story with beginning, middle, and end.

Expository: gives information, explains something, clarifies, or defines. The writing teaches, reveals, informs, or entertains the reader's understanding through a carefully crafted mix of key points and critical support.

Persuasive: attempts to convince the reader that a point of view is valid or to persuade the reader to take a specific action. It is based on a topic that is limited in scope, and that is debatable-a topic about which there could be more than one point of view. Persuasive differs from expository writing in that it does more than explain; it also takes a stand and tries to persuade the reader to take that same stand.

Literary Analysis/Book Reports/Movie Review: a personal response to literature (film), may be formal or informal depending on the assignment.

Descriptive/Sensory: presents an object, feelings, a place, or a person in a way that creates a vivid impression in the reader's mind, enabling the reader to readily picture what the writer is talking about.

Imaginative: invents a situation or story based on the writer's imagination. The writer may create a scene, situation or character, may predict what might happen under hypothetical circumstances, or use his/her creativity to solve a hypothetical problem.

Career Day

Every year at Back Bay High School we have a career day.  Students experience a number of different 20 minute presentations designed to help you as you proceed out into your adult lives.

Some of you might already have a clear idea of what you want to do as a career, while others of you might still be thinking about your individual options.

In today's blog assignment you will address the following questions.  Make sure you address each question in your blog.

Was career day helpful for you?  Why or why not?
Which presentation(s) did you like the most?  Describe why.
Which presentation(s) did you not like?  Describe why.
Do you have a career goal right now?  If so, what is it?
If not, what are you doing to find out what you are going to do career-wise?
Do you have a job now? If so where?  Describe the job.
If you are not working now will you be working over the summer?  If so where?  Describe the job.
What are you going to do after you graduate high school?  You won't be coming here 5 days a week anymore, so what are you going to do?

Minimum 150 words.  Answer all the questions from above  
If you answer all the questions and don't have 150 words you need to write more.  If you answer half of the questions and have a 150 words, you still need to answer all the questions.

Personal Mission Statement

Go here and read about personal mission statements.

Using the information in the article and any related google searches for "personal mission statement,"  write a 150 word personal mission statement.

3 Wishes

If you were given 3 wishes by some "powerful being capable of granting said wishes" of your choosing (genie, fairy godmother, Rumpelstiltskin, etc.), what would you use those wishes for?

Write at least 1 paragraph and at least 50 words describing each wish.   Include at least 1 picture relating to each wish.

You can not wish for more wishes.  It must be 3 specific things that you wish for and describe in detail including your reasons for making each wish.

The answer is "no."

So that means...

Include any links that would relate to your wishes.

Role Model

A person's character is made up of many different traits, some good and some bad.  A role model is a person that embodies the traits, accomplishments and status that you aspire to.

What real living human being do you look up to as a role model?  What are the character traits that you value?  If there isn't a real living human being that embodies the character traits that you aspire to be like, then list the character traits that are important to you and give some examples of real living human beings that come close to living up to those traits.

Minimum 200 words.
Minimum 4 paragraphs.
Minimum 2 pictures.
Include any links that might apply.

Blog Assignment- Domestic Violence

We had a school wide assembly today.  The woman speaking was from Laura's house.  In this blog assignment you are to write about your true feelings and reactions to what you heard.

Some students in the room weren't really focused on the topic.  Talking, laughing and being disrespectful while someone is talking about violence, injury and death is pathetic (my opinion).  Personally, I don't think there was anything to laugh about.  Domestic abuse/violence is very ugly, and the stories of the victims were disheartening, to say the least.

You are to write a 150 word (at least 4 paragraph) personal take/reaction to today's assembly.  Include any relevant details to the topic.  Also, include any pictures or links related to your writing.

Business Cards

Another piece of the Technology proficiency section of this class is creating business cards.  We are going to do this in Google documents.  You will share this file with me at brentwalske@rocketmail.com.

Updating your About.me page

Today you are going to redesign your about.me page.  You will do this by updating your biography, changing the background photo and changing the fonts and colors.

Make sure that the text is visible and the link to your blog can be seen without having to scroll the page.

My Summer Vacation

Read all the following instructions and follow them.

In today's blog assignment, you will write about your "big" plans for the summer.  Include many details when describing your plans.  Be very descriptive!  Include at least 3 pictures related to your writing.  Place the pictures in between the paragraphs.  Do not have all the pictures at the beginning or all the pictures at the end.

Minimum 3 pictures

If you write about visiting a specific place or doing a specific activity that has a website, then include a link to that website.

Flyer Assignment

Another topic in the Tech Proficiency subsection of this class is a flyer (lost dog, car for sale, etc.)  We will be doing this in 2 parts.

The first part will be a blog post for this flyer.
The title will be the type of flyer (lost monkey, pogo stick for sale, etc.)
The body will detail all the information about your topic.
You will include at least 2 pictures.
You will include your contact information including a fake phone number and your real email address for this class.

Spreadsheet Assignments

Part of this Introduction to Technology class covers some topics so that you can be deemed technology proficient.

The business letter was one of these topics.  Spreadsheets are another.

Yesterday, we began with Microsoft Excel, and then we moved into Google documents/spreadsheet.

The spreadsheet assignments are
1) a budget
2) a chart (we included this in the budget)
3) a schedule (We are doing a weekly schedule.)

Make sure every assignment is done!

Certain situations will happen like district internet problems, field trips, assemblies, etc. that will cause a class day with no new assignment.  When those "no new assignment" days occur, you need to make sure that you have every assignment completed correctly.  The key words being "completed" and "correctly."


You should have 22 different blog posts on the front page of your blog.
You need to make sure that your blog has a blog archive on the right hand side, so I can easily navigate through your assignments.


If you have all the assignments completed, then you should update your (Weebly) website.  Explore the possibilities of adding different elements to your site, and then add things to your site.

Where is the happiest place on earth?

Disneyland is the self-proclaimed "happiest place on earth."  What place do you consider the "happiest place on earth"?  Write about this place, specifically your reasons for choosing this place (150 words).  Include pictures and a link to a website with more information about this place.

Teen Issues

Make a list of the top 10 issues or problems you think teens are facing today.

Write 150 words about what you think would be the best way for communities and/or government to help teens with one of those issues.

Include at least 2 related pictures and at least 1 related link.

Blog Assignment- Current Event

Go to an online news website and find an interesting article from this week. Read the article and write a summary of the story in a blog post with a link to the web article. At least 150 words, 3 paragraphs, 1 link and 1 picture related to the article

Assignment 22

Blog review.  Pick a blog any blog.  Write a review of the blog including a link to the actual blog that you are reviewing.

Charity page for your website

Add another page to your weebly website.  This page will be dedicated to the charity of your choice.  You have previously researched and written about 2 charities.  You can choose one of these charities for your website or you can choose a new one.

Include 10 facts about your charity,  some pictures related to your charity, a link to your charity's website and why this charity is important to you.

The title of this page will be the name of the charity that you choose.

Your brand new Website

This assignment will be to create and customize your very own brand new website.  You will create this free website here.  Register for your website using the email that you created for this class.  Create your website as a subdomain of Weebly (They will give you 3 options.  Choose the first (top) option.

You can name your website whatever you want (as long as it is school appropriate).  You will customize the template and the background using images you have taken or found on Google.  You will customize the font and font color.  Explore all the possibilities for personalizing your website.  Hack around and make changes (add pages, pictures, words, etc.)

When you have registered for and done these initial customizations of your website, you will write a blog post and link to your new website.

Assignment- Motivation

Today we are exploring motivation.  Specifically, what motivates you.

Which of the 10 traits do you possess?  Which ones don't you possess and why?  What is your cause?  What is your dream?  How are you going to achieve your dream?  How are you going to stay motivated?  Include any relevant opinions or thoughts you picked up from the Dan Pink talk (video) we watched in class.

Write a blog post about one thing (school appropriate) that interests you, something that you really like.  Describe this thing (band, sport, hobby, movie, tevision show, video game, etc.) and all the reasons why you like it.

Assignment 20

I couldn't disagree with Ebert more on this one.

Go to this site and read the review from your favorite movie (if you can't pick a favorite, then pick a movie that you like a lot).  Type the name of the film in the search box (if Ebert has not reviewed the movie, then pick another).  After reading the review, you are going to write a blog post comparing/contrasting your opinions about the film and Roger Ebert's opinions.  Do not summarize the movie!  Write about your specific opinions the movie as they compare/contrast with Roger Ebert's opinions.

Make sure that you detail your opinions (what you think and why you think it).  If your opinion is the same as Roger Ebert's you need to give the reasons why you feel that way.

Include at least 1 picture from the movie (movie poster, etc.) and 1 link to the Roger Ebert review.

This blog assignment needs to be at least 100 words, at least 3 paragraphs, correct grammar, spelling, etc.

Assignment 19

Here's the situation.  5 years from now you become a celebrity (singer, athlete, actor, etc. you choose) and you become a contestant on the Celebrity Apprentice.  Being the amazing and intelligent person you are, you win a task.  Since you were the project manager for your team in this task, you win a large amount of money for your charity.  In this hypothetical situation the charity you chose in assignment 18 no longer exists.  For this blog post you will write about another charity that you are going to support.

You will write a blog entry that 1) **briefly describes this new charity, 2) details (at least 2 paragraphs) why this new charity is important to you, 3) includes a link to the charity's website and 4) includes at least 2 pictures related to the charity.
**The link to the charity's website will include all the information about the charity.  This is why you will only briefly describe (a few sentences) the charity in your post.

Assignment 18- Being Charitable

Sir Richard Branson is back again.  This time he has offered to give you and your family one million dollars cash as long as you do one job for him.  In addition to donating one million dollars to your family, he wants to donate another one million dollars to one charity.

Let's make a difference!

Your job is to research different charities to find one that means something to you.  After you find the charity that you want to support, you will write a blog entry that 1) **briefly describes the charity, 2) details (at least 2 paragraphs) why this charity is important to you, 3) includes a link to the charity's website and 4) includes at least 2 pictures related to the charity.

**The link to the charity's website will include all the information about the charity.  This is why you will only briefly describe (a few sentences) the charity in your post.

Assignment 17- Read the article and respond

You must read this article and respond to the following questions in a blog post.

Do you smoke cigarettes?  Why or why not?  If yes, have you ever tried to quit?  Do any of your friends or family smoke cigarettes?  What are your reasons for smoking or not smoking?  What is your overall opinion of cigarette smoking?

Assignment 16

Read this article and then write a blog post about your thoughts regarding the article.  What about the study is interesting?  Did any of these results/details surprise you?  What is the biggest factor you consider when choosing a place to live?  Would you consider living in Maine based on this study?  or Why wouldn't you live there.   etc.  Include a Map of the United States in your post that shows the state of Maine.

Assignment 15- Business Letter

This is a Google documents assignment not a blogger assignment.
Today's assignment is writing a business letter.

Specifically, you will be writing a letter of recommendation.  When applying for certain jobs (usually the higher paying ones) or scholarships you will be asked to provide letters of recommendation (usually 3).  These letters are written by teachers, principals, former bosses, etc.

For this assignment you will be writing a letter of recommendation about yourself (written in third person).  It needs to be typed in the proper format in Google documents.  Name (Rename) your google document "Letter of Recommendation Yourlastname."   After it is written you will share it with me brentwalske@rocketmail.com

Follow this example.  Write this letter "To Mr. Walske:"  instead of "To whom it may concern:"

Your letter needs to have at least three paragraphs.  For example the paragraphs could be 1) background information  2) skills/talents  3) accomplishments.

This letter is by you, about you, and addressed to me.

You will not be writing in first person "I this and I that."  You are writing about yourself, but you are not writing as yourself.

Example:

I would like to recommend Brent Walske for President of the United States.  He is a very intelligent and motivated person.  Brent has great problem solving skills and works well under pressure. Blah, blah, blah, etc.

Assignment 14

Multi-billionaire Sir Richard Branson shows up at Back Bay High School today and offers you and your family or friends a week-long, all expenses paid trip to anywhere on the planet Earth.  He owns the plane that will fly you there.  He has more than enough money to pay for any and all expenses.  Where do you choose to go?  Why?

Research online places that would be cool to visit remembering that "money is no object" meaning that you have the unlimited resources of Branson.  Describe where you will choose to go and the reasons for choosing this destination.  Detail what you will do once you get to your destination.  Include pictures (at least 4) of your destination and the activities that you will do there.  Include at least one link to something related to your post.

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Ice Hotel

After seeing a Discovery Channel documentary on this awesome Hotel made out of ice, I would love to go and stay there.  This hotel is built/rebuilt every year in Sweden for travelers from around the globe to stay.

Ice Bar

Artists/ice sculptors from around the world are hired to create the inner decor of the hotel.  All of the walls and structures are created from ice and snow.  In addition to the ice hotel they have other structures, "warm rooms" built out of traditional materials to escape the cold.

Many activities are available to do outside of the hotel.  I would definitely go skiing/snowboarding/snow shoeing.  Snow mobile tours of the surrounding area would be fun.

Snowmobiling

If I were there during the warmer times when white water rafting was available, I would definitely give that a try.  Checking out the northern lights would be a must.

The Northern Lights

This is not the most extravagant/expensive choice, but it would be a one-of-a-kind experience that I would enjoy.

Assignment 13- My Spring Break

Write about what you did during your 9 day break from school.  If you want to claim that you didn't do anything, then you need to write about what you did while you weren't doing anything (eating, watching television, playing video games, annoying your parents, etc.).

Grammatically correct sentences.  USE SPELLCHECK

Assignment 12- Using your brain

Go here and answer the "extra credit" question in a blog entry titled "Assignment 12- Using my brain"

At a rural cabin, you get water from a well using only a 4-gallon bucket and a 9-gallon bucket. In a single trip from the well to the cabin, what whole number gallon amounts of water could you bring back to the cabin?

There are no markings on the pails.  And, you can’t do any estimating or add any markings!

The easy ones are

4- fill up the 4-gallon bucket

9- fill up the 9-gallon bucket

13- fill up both buckets

... these blue words in your post.  Then answer the question.  This is for regular credit in this class.  You may collaborate with other students in this class to come up with all the answers.  Make sure that you explain all possible gallon amounts to get credit.

The word I and any contraction built with the word I is always capitalized!  


That being said, again, any assignments with I not capitalized will not be graded.  This means that it will be a zero in the Schoolloop grade book.


If you want credit for your assignment then you had better capitalize the word I and all it's variations if you use it in your writing.

Assignment 9- My Dream School

Write a blog entry about the school that you would attend (your choice) after graduation if money, grades and admissions tests were not a consideration.  Write about the school (Harvard, UCLA, etc.), what you would study (Pre Med, English, Art, etc.) and why you would go there given all the other choices in the world.  If you don't plan on attending any schools after High School, you still need to pick a school as if you were being forced to go somewhere.  You must pick a school and write about it.

Find a website for this school to link to in your post.  Find some pictures for your post (if you can't find pictures of the school, then include pictures that relate to the field of study that you would be going to that school for.  The school can be a technical institute, 2 year college, 4 year college, private university, etc.

*special note-  when using spellcheck, if the word is not very close to the actual spelling of the word you are trying to use, then it's possible that none of the options that spellcheck gives you will be the correct word.

Assignment 8- Adding a second page to your blog

Click on the clipboard icon to the right of the orange pencil icon  (Go to post list)

Click on settings.

Click on pages.

Click new page (blank page)-  name it "Page 2"

Make sure you change the show pages as from "don't show" to display as "side link"

While on this screen edit the name of the main page to "Front page."

Assignment 7- Me in Five Years

In this blog entry, you will write about your immediate goals.  This entry will answer the questions "Where do you want to be in 5 years?" and "How are you going to get there?"  

Write a detailed account of how you want the next five years of your life to go.  If you are a Junior, the beginning of your post needs to include something about finishing your last year of high school.

After high school, be specific about what you want to do.  For example, don't just write "go to community college."  Give details.  What college?  What degree/certificate program? etc.  

Include any career goals, traveling plans, etc.  How will you support yourself?  What are you going to be doing for a job?  Are you going to be fully funded by your parents?  For most, once you hit 18 years of age, you are on your own.  How are you going to get money?

The entry needs to be written correctly (grammatically correct/complete sentences, use spellcheck, etc.)  

Minimum of 200 words.

Minimum 4 pictures related to your writing

Procedure for this class

Every day when you arrive in this class you will begin by doing the following things.

1.     Log on to the computer if it is not already logged in   Name:  app  Password:  123

2.     Open Safari

3.     go to the blog for this class  bbhs2012.blogspot.com

4.     Open a New tab and log in to your email account for this class.

5.     Open a New tab and log in to your blog for this class.

6.     Open a New tab and log in to your about.me page.

Leave all 4 of these tabs open and logged in until you are told to sign out at the end of the period.

Assignment 6- Linking your blog to your About.me page

1.  Log in to your about.me page

2.  Click on Add service (found underneath your Bio)

3.  Choose Blogger

4.  Type in the correct address for your blog

5.  Test the link to see if it works

Assignment 5- My Time at Back Bay High School

Some of you are seniors and will be moving on to bigger and better things next year.  Some of you might be returning to your home school next year.  Some of you might be back here next year.  Regardless of your situation you are here right now.

For this blog assignment you will be reflecting back on your time at Back Bay High School.  Write about your favorite things about BBHS, your least favorite things about BBHS, what you are going to miss most (if you plan on returning next year, write what you will be looking forward to the most next year at BBHS), etc.

Requirements-

minimum 200 words

minimum 4 paragraphs

minimum 4 pictures

(take pictures of Back Bay HS with your phone or a friend's)

minimum 1 link

(if writing about a teacher, link to their schoolloop page)

Use proper grammar and spelling

Do all the writing today in class.  Then take the pictures during the rest of the week before class.  Then email yourself the pictures, so you can insert them into your blog.  If you do not have a phone with internet ask a friend who does to take the pictures and email them to you.

This is a technology class.

You will be using a variety of websites and programs in this class.

Each assignment has specific directions that must be followed.

Blog posts must be written with grammatically correct sentences that fulfill the directions for the assignment.

If you are directed to include a picture(s), then you must include at least the amount of pictures asked for.

If you are directed to include a link(s), then you must include at least the amount of links asked for.

If you are directed to email specific information to me, then you must do that to complete the assignment.

You must fully read the directions for each assignment and follow them in order to complete each assignment.

Assignment 4- Writing a Resume

For this assignment you will be writing a resume using the correct format.  There are some internet sites that you can use to create a resume like this one.

You will be using Google documents to write this resume (not the example website).
Rename the google document to "resume yourlastname" (use your last name when you save the document) and share it with me brentwalske@rocketmail.com

After Completing the first 3 assignments...

...send me an email at bwalske@nmusd.us telling me to grade your assignments at your blog (include the address of your blog (ex.  bbhs2012.blogpot.com)

Assignment 3- Your favorite thing

Write about something that interests you.  It could be your favorite band, your favorite food, your favorite movie, your favorite sport/sports team, your favorite artist, etc.

In this blog post you will include at least 100 words (grammatically correct sentences),2 pictures relating to your topic and at least one link to a related website.

Be sure to include your opinions about this topic.  Why is this thing your favorite?  In addition to your opinions, include many details about your topic (the thing-band, food, movie, artist, etc.).

More info-Assignment 2- Creating a link in a blog post

In order to create a link in a post, you must first type the word or phrase that will be linked.

for example,   link

Next, highlight that word and click the Link  button in the tool bar.

Finally, type in the correct address to the website that is being linked.

For this assignment, you will be linking to your about.me page.

Update your blogger profile with a picture

1.  Update your blogger profile by adding a picture.  It doesn't have to be a picture of you, but it must be a picture that is school appropriate.

2.  Join this site (the blue rectangular button that reads "Join this site").  Use your google account and follow this blog.  If you have done this correctly your picture (the pic that you added to your profile) will show up with the other students who have completed this task.

Assignment 2- About.me

1.  Go to the website about.me and create an account using the email address you created for this class.

about.me/firstlastname

2.  After the about.me account is created, publish a blog entry with a link to your about.me page.
3.  Send me an email (bwalske@nmusd.us) with your about.me url.
